Our Town History

While Florida was a Spanish Territory, Spanish Governor Coppinger issued a land grant to John Broward in 1816. John was the 4th son of French immigrants.

Florida became an American Territory in 1821. In 1825, the Broward land grant was certified by the United States. John Broward played an active part in organizing the government of the new state of Florida. All of the Broward men served in the Confederate Army. The remainder of the Family moved West to White Springs, Florida during the Civil War States. Many large generations of the Broward Family stayed in North Florida while others returned to Pomona.

The Founding of Pomona Park occurred after the end of the war. Over the next 25 years or so, roughly 25 families settled here. They had to be self-sufficient due to limited purchasing and transportation alternatives.
