On Saturday, February 4th, 2017, over a dozen Ladies from Palatka, Interlachen, Pomona Park, San Mateo, Palm Coast, Bunnell, and Indiana gathered at Miss D's Quilt Shop [305 St. Johns Avenue] creating Quilts of Valor on 'National Sew Day'.
The Quilts of Valor (QOV) web site details:
“The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” [http://www.qovf.org/ history]
The effort began in 2003 when one Gold Star mother with a vision, "Quilts - Healing" emotional and physical wounds of war, created one quilt for one special veteran. Quilts carry personalized tags identifying the recipient and those who cut, sewed, and quilted that 'Quilt of Valor'. 312 Quilts in January raising the count to more than 151,073 Quilts of Valor that have been awarded around the country.
Saturday's group effort succeeded in 'piecing' five quilt tops that will be combined with batting and back material, quilted, bound, labeled by volunteers then awarded locally. The laying on of the quilts make for emotional moments all around the country.
